Use this interactive map of 1940 Great Britain to find your ancestor's home town. This map was created from detailed survey maps of the UK from 1920 to 1940. What is neat about this tool is that it overlays a modern map of the UK. You can use it to compare how the region looked in 1940 at the beginning of the Second World War to how it looks today:
-
Grab and move the map with your mouse to view different parts of Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.
-
You can use the zoom buttons on the left side to zoom up and down.
-
Once you zoom beyond the magnification of the 1940 historic map, you will see an overlay of a modern map. You can use this overlay to see what the region looks like today. You can switch between road, aerial and bird's eye view.
