Top 100 Genealogy Websites for 2013

Our annual review and ranking of the top 100 genealogy websites from around the world. Once again, we spent countless hours compiling an extensive collection of genealogy websites from various countries. Many old favorites made the list, as well as some interesting new ones. Find out what is hot and what is not.

As one of the world’s leading free genealogy websites, our mission at GenealogyInTime Magazine is to find creative and innovative ways to help people connect with their ancestors. One way we do this is to provide an objective and comprehensive list of the most popular genealogy websites from around the world.

The top 100 list serves as a useful guide for both beginning and advanced genealogy users. It is always helpful to know what websites other people find useful and relevant. The top 100 list also provides some interesting insight into how the field of genealogy has evolved over the past year.

For the latest list of the top genealogy websites, please see the article Top 100 Genealogy Websites of 2014.

A Brief Word on Methodology

The methodology used to compile this list was described in detail in last year’s article Top 100 Most Popular Genealogy Websites for 2012 (please carefully read this article if you have any specific questions).

We have made a few enhancements/refinements to the 2013 list based on reader feedback:

• We have split the category “forum” into two categories (“forum” and “family tree”) to provide better clarity.

• We have shown each website’s 2012 ranking as a comparator.

• We no longer exclude websites with similar content but different internet addresses (which can occur with some commercial websites). Including all genealogy websites provides a better indication of the overall genealogy marketplace.

• The raw Alexa numbers can now be found in the appendix at the end of the article.

There are three main services that provide internet traffic rankings: Alexa, Compete and Quantcast. Compete and Quantcast measure primarily US internet traffic. This can be incomplete, particularly for a non-US website. Alexa is the leading internet traffic provider. It measures global traffic, which is why we use them for our rankings.
